Early teens face distinctive challenges. These include:

  • entering adolescence
  • beginning to ask big questions
  • figuring out what they're learning at school
  • seeking deeper meaning in all aspects of their lives
  • facing new and more intense social and academic pressures

Unfortunately, for many students at this unique developmental stage, classroom engagement also begins to wane.

Join Jennifer Ciok to gain insights and reflections from other educators, researchers, and students, to clarify opportunities and challenges teachers face at this level.

This session will include:

  • An examination of the developing adolescent brain and how teachers can collect qualitative data to better understand students’ experience.
  • Simple and practical ways to infuse relevance and meaning into the curriculum by:
    • exploring authentic applications, passion projects, and service learning opportunities to connect classroom learning to the real world
    • integrating art into the classroom to help foster self- expression and curiosity
    • creating experiences that elevate students' own stories and backgrounds so that they feel seen, heard, and valued

You will take-away:

  • strategies across content areas
  • reflective questions to support implementation efforts
  • real-life examples of successful outcomes

As education leaders you’ll learn to keep engagement high, bolster academic outcomes, and give students the support they need at a critical life stage.

Target audience includes Teachers, Instructional Coaches, Pre-Service Teachers, Curriculum Directors, Principals, District Administrators Grades 5-9
