Workshop Description: 

Productive word knowledge, the ability to competently use a word in speech and writing, is pivotal to school and workplace achievement.  Drawing on scholarship and extensive classroom experience, Dr. Kinsella introduces research-based instructional principles and practices to prepare English learners and striving readers for the vocabulary demands of academic interaction, text analysis, and constructed response.  She provides a schema for prioritizing vocabulary for robust instruction and illustrates informed word selection with practice texts. She demonstrates explicit instruction of central concepts and topic words as well as high-utility word families (e.g., compare, comparison) essential for advanced communication.  Dr. Kinsella explains how to design effective application tasks and brief, daily formative assessments that advance word knowledge. Participants receive digital and print resources, including sample lessons, note-taking guide formats, and competency-aligned word lists to support implementation.

Participants will learn effective ways to:

  • Analyze text to establish conceptual, topical, and high-utility vocabulary priorities

  • Frontload central lesson concepts using a clear process and customized organizers

  • Explicitly teach high-utility academic word families linked to academic competencies

  • Integrate examples and practice using common communications (academic word partners)

  • Structure brief, constructed verbal and written responses applying new lesson terms

  • Guide informed analysis of text context to ascertain new word meaning

  • Briefly address low-incidence and low-priority words using a viable instructional routine 

  • Set up an organized vocabulary notebook with relevant sections and note-taking guides

  • Design and implement brief formative assessments to provide meaningful review

WORKSHOP PRESENTER:

Kate Kinsella, Ed.D. is an emeritus teacher educator at San Francisco State University where she addressed second language development research and pedagogy.  She is currently the CEO of Dr. Kate Kinsella & Associates, and educational research and consultancy firm dedicated to English learner achievement.  A highly-sought after speaker and consultant to school districts and U.S. State Deparmtents of Education, she has provided guidance and training for teachers of English learners in suburban, urban and rural contexts throughout the nation.  Her 30 year teaching career focus has been equipping youths from diverse economic and linguistic backgrounds with the academic English language, reading and writing skills to be truly college ready. Dr. Kinsella is the author of research-validated programs to support English learners and struggling readers, including READ 180, English 3D, and the Academic Vocabulary Toolkit.  Dr. Kinsella serves as the lead scholar and pedagogy guide on a number of U.S. Department of Education funded research initiatives to improve educational outcomes for EL.  In particular, a partnership with the California League of Schools, the "Families for College" Innovation in Education (I3) grant now celebrates 83% reclassification of 320 long-term English learners in Moreno Valley USD.  Her EL development program, English 3D, was the curricular and pedagogical anchor for these yourng scholars' English language proficiency and writing gains.
