BOSTON, MA—Deb Delisle, ASCD Executive Director and CEO, issued the following statement in response to the passage of a $1.3 trillion omnibus spending bill that would fund the federal government through Sept. 30, 2018:
We are pleased that Congress has increased funding by almost $4 billion for the federal education programs that support student success, an educated workforce, and a vibrant economy. We also applaud Congress for maintaining the Title II funding that supports the professional development of educators and rejecting the administration’s efforts to eliminate the only funding dedicated to enhance the effectiveness of teachers and school leaders. As our Whole Child Initiative begins its second decade, we are gratified that Congress nearly tripled funding for well-rounded education activities under Title IV of ESSA. Lawmakers are clearly learning what educators and parents have known for some time—that meeting the comprehensive needs of students, both academically and socially emotionally, is an essential element of student achievement and overall well-being.
